We do not abandon our own, according to this plea.

Even if they are charged with some serious criminal behavior.

And are the head of the Crown Heights Community Council.

And have several federal indictments to your name.

Gosh, I guess I know whom to turn to in case I ever get caught doing massively illegal crap. I'm sure they will support me just as passionately as they do with this guy. Right?

ETA- the second link applies only to Shalom and not to Moshe.
ETA again- there are two men by the same name of Shalom Rubashkin who are both investigated/charged with different crimes.

Reason number 10000 why I'm an apikorset--DH and I are ethical vegetarians because of shit like this.

I'm so sick of people saying Rubashkin is being targeted because of antisemitism. If frum posters were paying attention to the outside world, they'd notice that these raids and the anti-immigration activity has been going on for a while now. Rubashkin's is only the latest in a series of raids.

As far as the Rubashkins are concerned, I don't know the whole deal, but where there's smoke, there's fire. I'm a vegetarian, so it's not an issue for me, but how do people continue to purchase Rubashkin products?

She doesn't know that the "informers and haters of Israel" are going to burn in hell for prosecuting a great and holy man, Mr Rubashkin. Then how come:

- I don’t see Jewish names and even much wrongdoing in indictment?
- Jews openly harass their own while the situation is still quite foggy?
- You do not know about problems and thus do not harass gentile businessmen?
- All the big mouths that yell across the continent about problems of kosher Jews did nothing on the local level to protect slandered wife and her children from rich but hardly kosher in-laws?

By the way, after this woman was slandered for nothing I would give huge benefit of the doubt anyone reported by interested party.

Another coward is my oldest daughter who wouldn’t let me grill a young man representing the same issues she raises behind the web.
Lashon hara rules allow to say anything that needs to be said in proper setting - and web is not proper setting.

This is how liberal Jews are thinking: http://www.frontpagemag.com/Articles/ReadArticle.asp?ID=3020 ?

It's a shame there's no law against internet defamation & slander. You're a petty selfish cowardly assasin, hurting others because it makes you feel good. This web site does more evil than anything you complain about. I know you don't care how much harm you do to the people you defame, but did it ever occur to you that anti-semites will pick up your lies, and it could come back to hurt someone you actually care about? Why don't you make good on your promise to stop blogging?

I would guess there is or soon will be a law about internet defamation and slander.

I don't know that citing to other websites and newspaper articles and wiki sites would fall under any defamation laws, though. Kind of like showing your buddy a newspaper doesn't make you a slanderer.

If you are worried about anti-semites, I first suggest that you contact those who have translated the gemara, as the antisemites go there first, right before coming to my site.

But in the interests of fairness, go ahead and tell me what evil results this website has engendered. Whom has it harmed? Whom has it harmed that I know? Also, what lies do you refer to?

I don't see where you see the hypocrisy in this; they're very forthright about why you should support him:

"The turnout at tomorrow’s sentencing will tell the world whether we will **support a family that supports us** or whether we have hung a fellow Jew out to dry."

Furthermore, from a strictly secular standpoint, I don't see why there's anything wrong with standing up for someone who has donated a lot from their money, time and life to your community, while there might be less of a turnout when someone who hasn't been as active and essential as a community member. Wouldn't hypocrisy mean turning your back on such a generous person? Wouldn't it be wrong that they've given so much to your community and you don't even show them the gratitude of helping them out where you can? Isn't it right that the sentencing judge should be able to fairly understand your importance to your community by having its leaders show up at your sentencing?

Do you think it would be any different in a secular setting, with a secular community leader/activist who is being sentenced for committing non-heinous crimes?

Unfortunately, I often use the term "hypocritical" when I really mean " double-standard".

On the secular setting thing, how many people showed up to Eliot Spitzer's hearing? I'm sure he helped a lot of nice folks in his time. What about that Larry Craig guy?

Higher Standard
(Anonymous)
2008-11-04 02:15 pm UTC (link)
To our budding lawyer: I understand why someone's background and good/bad deeds can be relevant to sentencing. I wonder why an arguement couldn't be made that the Rubashkins should be held to a higher standard. The argument would go something like this: here are folks who had every advantage -- money, power, education, ability to hire lawyers to advise them about environmental regulations and their responsibilities, lots of self-discipline, etc., and yet they broke the law. I'd also be interested in knowing if they ever took responsibility and apologized? Isn't contrition also a factor in sentencing. If you read VIN, YWN, CH.info, etc. one would think there was no reason to be contrite.

It's all about money and how much you have. Forget that the money you make was illegal/stolen/or obtained from other illegal business. As long as you give lots of charity to those that matter, then it's ok. So go ahead and claim benefits even though you don't deserve it, but as long as you give to tzedokohs then it's ok. If you give enough money then everything is ok. You want to make something that's treif kosher? Pay enough and it'll be done and no one will say a thing. R

It is hard for me to fully comprehand minimum wage law. As a new immigrant I used to babysit for $2.50 an hour and I appreciated this opportunity.
Trainees who are not as productive yet are better off with smaller salary than without one. People who do not pay taxes or otherwise work illegally get paid less on the market.

If government lets illegals into the country then it’s good that they have means to survive.

The cruelty charges are associated with names of Latino supervisors, which tells me few things and one of them is that Latinos had chance for promotion.
As a professional teacher I can appreciate how hard it is to teach safety uneducated workers especially through intermediaries and I doubt that Jewish plants’ statistic is any worse than of other similar environments.

I realize that government has right to upheld its laws even if I don’t understand them, however I don’t have to be overly enthusiastic about nonsense and double standards.
This entire situation resembles Europe communities that found no use of Jewish enterprises.

I feel bad for Jewish entrepreneurs, meat shortages, big mouths(who find it easier to criticize then to get their own hands dirty), and even for US as we know it.

Last night a (hardly religious) worker in our kosher store told me that Rubashkin had the best quality of kosher meat – properly packaged to retain freshness and properly carved (without broken limbs). He said that they invested in best equipment, best procedures, and best business practices and he cannot comprehend why anyone would want to bring down the best.
