The Source of the Problem

Okay, from what I understand of this article, the owner of a newspaper is suing a group of rabbis for banning his newspaper  and libeling it as "unsuitable" for Hareidim.  Why was it unsuitable for Hareidim? Well, it displayed photos of females. Blurred photos, to be sure, but they were still female. The owner of the paper was warned, but he persisted in his immoral ways.

Now this is all good and well as it should be. However, the problem still remains. We can't avoid talking about it for much longer. It's a serious issue that we need to face as a community.

There are females all around us. Everywhere.  In stores, in the street, in hospital lobbies. In grocery check -out lines and in the elevators and in my neighbor's home.  Moreover, these females are not blurred, if you've noticed. In fact, they are high-definition females. You can almost touch them, that's how real they look (not that I recommend touching them). Maybe they are 3-D even.

Don't shoot the messenger, I'm just telling it like it is.

Whose fault is all this? Yep, you know. It's difficult to admit, but you've known the answer all along.  You know in your heart, down deep inside, whose fault this all is. It is the Lord's fault. He has gone and made those women. And He had plenty of reminders and plenty of chances to correct His errors. Despite how patient we have all been, there are still females everywhere around us. In fact, new ones are made every day, I would guess.  Enough is enough, I say.  This must come to an end.

We must ban God. Sure, He's done some good things here and there, random acts of kindness and all that. But we need to stand up and fight for what we believe in, for what the Torah requires of us. We must eradicate the evil from our midst. It will be difficult, but we must ban the insolent Lord who keeps causing females to appear over and over again, despite our repeated requests. There may be some negative consequences to this kol korei, but that's never stopped us before. We know the truth and we are willing to do whatever it takes to get our message across.

No more God, no more prayers, no more offerings, no more fasting, no more Mr. Nice Orthodox Jews. Not until He agrees to repent and eliminate all females from our surroundings. Or at the very least, make them blurry.

In another devade or so, virtual reality processing will have gotten to the point that O Jewish men can routinely wear goggles that will in real time make any women they see appear as white geese. Problem solved.

When I was growing up we used to get a magazine that was geared to the whole family. In the front there were divrei Torah for men, then articles about child rearing and recipes for the women, and finally stories for boys and stories for girls. The stories for boys were illustrated appropriately, with the boys doing whatever the boys in the story were doing (learning Torah) but the girls stories had random pictures of a jump rope or a baby bottle. Because obviously if one of the boys or men reading the magazine saw a pen-drawn picture of a girl it would wreak havoc. HAVOC I TELL YOU.

I think jumpropes and baby bottles represent girls very well, what's the problem? Maybe a frilly apron or a pot cooking on a stove would also help.

yep it makes utter sense! Just ban women altogether :)

On the other note, did you blur your face out of your picture so that men wouldn't be tempted? That's so righteous of you!

First, you cannot apply the laws of our system to the One outside of it.
Then, you have to realize that these bans are the reaction to current trend of putting everything into the open. As a result men get oversaturated and are not looking forward to getting married, etc.
http://www.geocities.com/tamaralevin2000/Gays.html
You have to admit that it is very hard to keep our boys pious in seductive environment. Besides, we are supposed to be a role model of the world, so if the world tips to one extreme, we have to show them the cure at the opposite extreme. And people do notice. Even back in Russia the Jews were considered less problematic marriage partners, G-d forbid.
I also get annoyed with men’s pictures in Jewish magazines, but I expect things to get back to basics as soon as boys relearn to appreciate the girl’s smile or sight of her neck…

Do you really think that showing the opposite extreme is an effective way of influencing the world? I don't. I think showing the sane middle is more likely to influence someone than saying "Look! We're just as crazy as you are, only exactly the opposite way."

According to Maimonides it is impossible to overcome an extreme weakness without going to another extreme. So being quite human we may not be able to continue our usual cleanliness routine in the middle of epidemic.

As for influence, you may notice that extremist Muslims are doing quite impressive job recruiting Americans. And we are not that crazy and not even interested in recruiting, so fear not.

I find it hard to believe that seeing a woman in a magazine would not make a man want to get married. I see plenty of women in magazines (and in real life) and it doesn't make me appreciate my fiancee any less, and I am looking forward to our life as a married couple.

Glowing_flower says, I don't know whether to laugh or to cry. It's so out of touch with reality. It's so "frumer than HaShem."

The idea that people don't want to get married because they see a picture of a woman in a magazine is just ludicrous.

And none of this is going to bring anyone closer to HaShem.

This is an issue that makes me sad

One day, this past winter, I was looking through a local frum publication. In it they had pictures from around town during a snowstorm, and I came across an adorable picture of children playing in the snow. Only upon looking closer did I notice that the little girls' faces were blurred out. It may sound melodramatic but my heart broke for those poor little girls. These girls could not have been older than eight TOPS (they were probably between ages 2-6,) what message is being sent to these little girls when they see their faces blurred out but their brothers' faces being displayed? I can't imagine what that could do to very young girl's self image. It's disgusting.

The crazy part of it all is that the more hidden and illicit they make females, the more enticing they become. Which of course leads to many more cries of "Our men just can't control themselves!! If only women knew what they were doing to our poor men when they walk down the street looking even remotely attractive! "

Grrrrrrr, this despicable attitude toward women and the villification of natural urges are two of my biggest pet peeves regarding the Orthodox world.

Right, I think that instead of harming the girls' self esteem, all these attitudes are just encouraging frum society to sexualize girls at young ages, ironically, because that is one of frum society's main complaints about the secular world. But really, if a 6 year old's face needs to be blurred out, what other conclusion is there, other than she must be so sexy that we need to blur her features lest all the men sin ?

You're absolutely right about this ridiculous practice sexualizing females at a young age, but I really do believe that in addition to that it is harmful to their self esteem. A 6 year old is not mature enough to understand the concept of sexualization, but she is old enough to feel "bad" because her photo is unfit for publication.

The source of the problem
(Anonymous)
2009-07-10 03:21 am UTC (link)
I believe that you are mistaken in identifying the source of the problem. The source of the problem is NOT the fact that there are females around us and NOT Go-d who had created them. I actually could recruit the Medrash and Rashi to support my position.
As you know, the rabonim of today are not the first ones to complain to Go-d about females and by extension, as you've pointed, about Go-d himself. The first rabbi in the world, a guy name Addam was first. He had the audacity to actually reprimand Go-d for creating the feminine gender by saying: 'The woman that YOU (i.e. Go-d) gaveth to me, she caused all this trouble (whatever that trouble might have been.)' And Go-d was not really impressed by this stupidity and instead of taking away the woman, or banning himself, instead he punished the real culprit - Rabbi Adam - by banishing him from Eden.
So today, instead of banning Go-d and/or bluring the beatiful feminin gender, maybe we should follw the footsteps of Go-d and bun the rabbonim (not all of them, only those who are involve in this stupidity.)
Oh, and by the way I am an Orthodox man.
